Last time I was in L.A. and had some time off I went to some fantastic shows that were part of the Pacific Standard Time season. My favourite was Eames Design: The Guest-Host Relationship. The quote pictured was on the outside of the A+D Museum on Wilshire Boulevard.

The premise was incredibly instructive. They had filled the room full of Eames quotes and displayed them with utilitarian items that personified his insights and philosophies. To that end there were collections of loaves of bread, skateboards, reams of paper, balls of string, fins – and yes, computers.

‘The role of the designer,’ said Charles Eames, ‘is that of a very good, thoughtful host, all of whose energy goes into trying to anticipate the needs of his guests.’

It was mostly about how everything is designed and function is key. Everything else is informative but secondary.

All that is well and good but I have to mention I was initially made aware of the show through this short film and I am not sure I can surmise The Eames proposition as well as Ice Cube does – “Ones man’s eyesore is another mans paradise”:

There was a lot of great material here and I shall be revisiting more of it soon
